10th September 2004 - Makevek Challenge takes
20 volunteers to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro.

Makevek Challenge was established to raise money for the Sarcoma Unit Research Fund (S.U.R.F) and the Royal Marsden Hospital, London.

All monies raised go directly to S.U.R.F where Dr. Ian Johnson and his team undertake cutting edge research to find a cure for Ewing’s Sarcoma, unfortunately an increasingly less rare and far too often fatal form of cancer.

3 years ago I set up Makevek Challenge to raise money for Dr Judson and his team by climbing the Seven Summits. Having already made an attempt on Mt. Blanc, Mt Kilimanjaro is the second of these summits.

This year on 6th September the climbers will congregate in Moshi ready for departure up the Umbwe Route. On Tuesday 7th September, led by a team of experienced guides, climbers will set off on this challenging yet sparsely populated route up through thick forests to incredible vistas of lava fields and glaciers as they make their way up the most exhilarating approach to the summit. After celebrating your summit with breathtaking views of Tanzania and Kenya, you will descend via the Mweka route to return to Moshi on 12th September. The trek will span 6 days to give climbers the best chance of acclimatization for a safe and successful ascent and descent.

At this early stage final details are yet to be confirmed, however I would like to invite you and your friends to be one of the 20 climbers with whom we aim to raise 50,000 pounds for one man and his team. A man who has already done so much for my family and who will do so much for so many more.

If you are interested or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me via emailat makevekchallenge@yahoo.com.au.

Thank you very much for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Mark
